Country’s hub status and opportunities in marine transport and logistics, trends under spotlight

In a proactive move, the Ceylon Association of Ships’ Agents (CASA) for the first time in Sri Lanka will hold an international conference in May to showcase the country’s hub status and potential for marine transport and logistics.

The event titled “International Marine Transport and Logistics Conference” will be held from May 26 to 27 at the Trans Asia Hotel.

“Sri Lanka has never presented an international conference related to maritime affairs and it was felt that it was time to hold a conference of this nature covering wide subjects in order that current and future trends are made aware of the industry and also in the hope of promoting Sri Lanka as an international hub,” CASA Chairman Capt. A.V. Rajendra said.
The two-day conference will consist of 10 sessions and a variety of topics will be presented by renowned international speakers from overseas such as USA, UK, Singapore, Malaysia, and India.

Most eminent local personalities will be drawn from the industry to function as moderator/session chairman for each individual session. “We are expecting about 250 participants, both local and foreign,” Capt. Rajendra said.

CASA, which styles itself as the pioneering and leading light of Sri Lankan shipping industry, said that the international conference was in recognition of the need for a global forum to address matters concerning the industry by international speakers of repute to give the participants the best insights possible on a wide range of industry related issues.

Topics to be taken up at the conference include shape of future shipping, legal and commercial regimes, port security and safety, salvage, refuge in distress and claims, seamless logistics, the eCommerce paradigm, GloBallast Partnerships and bio diversity, international freight forwarding, engineering services in marine transport and safety at sea.

CASA said that the conference would be useful for professionals in the senior and middle management of various sectors of the industry such as ship owners, operators, managers, logistics service providers, insurance companies, bankers, importers and exporters, port terminal operators, road hauliers, freight forwarders, trade associations, engineering service providers, ships agents and state agencies.

The event is supported by the Company of Master Mariners and the Nautical Institute Sri Lanka Branch. CASA is also inviting interested companies to support the mega conference as sponsors.
