Hayleys designs, builds & donates mobile water treatment plant to Menik Farm - September 29, 2009
A mobile water treatment plant designed and custom built by Puritas, the Hayleys Group’s sewage, waste water and raw water treatment solutions company, has been deployed at Zone 5 of the Menik Farm welfare village complex through an initiative jointly funded by Hayleys and the One Sri Lanka Foundation.
The skid-mounted Mobile Water Treatment System is capable of treating 50,000 litres of water per day. It will be used to purify to safe drinking standards the water supplied by the Water Supply & Drainage Board from the Malwathu Oya.
The unit, pre-assembled by Puritas at its Wewelduwa facility consists of a multimedia filter, activated carbon filter, micron filter, ultraviolet sterilizer and chlorination system together with all required accessories. Its design permits the entire unit to be moved to another site if required. Funds for the construction of the treatment plant were provided by the Hayleys Group and One Sri Lanka Foundation, an organisation committed to developing and implementing humanitarian projects focused on strengthening community values and rehabilitating families and victims of the war. The Foundation’s support was secured by Prof. Harendra de Silva, its Trustee in Sri Lanka.
“A steady supply of safe drinking water is one of the most urgent needs of the welfare village,” said Colonel (Retired) Shantha de Mel, Zone Commander for Zone 5 at Menik Farm. “We are obliged to Hayleys who used its proven expertise in the design of water treatment systems to purpose-build this mobile unit for the benefit of the displaced persons, and to One Sri Lanka Foundation for supporting the project.”
An ISO 9001 certified company, Puritas is the country’s leading builder of sewage, waste water and water treatment plants. The company has extensive chemical, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering expertise and the inputs of highly qualified microbiologists and chemists for its projects. Most of the technology used in its plants is designed and built locally.
The Hayleys Group originally launched its IDP relief effort on April 25 th this year to provide drinking water, sanitation facilities, food and clothing to the displaced in northern Sri Lanka. The Group initially deployed containers and flexi-tanks which supplied the camps with water and also donated plastic storage tanks, water pumps, materials for the construction of temporary toilets, plastic barrels, examination gloves, household gloves, bed sheets, as well as food, clothing and cleaning implements.
Employees of the Group also voluntarily donated a day’s wages towards the needs of the internally displaced and their employer companies doubled the funds thus raised with matching contributions.
A multinational conglomerate whose Sri Lankan origins date back to 1878, Hayleys PLC has been thrice adjudged the country’s best corporate citizen. One of its most significant contributions to a needy community was a new school built at a cost of Rs 75 million for 500 children in Kathaluwa, Ahangama, an area devastated by the tsunami of 2004.
